He graduated from Northwestern College in Orange City, IA with a degree in Biology- Health Professions and a concentration in Neuroscience. He performed research in immunology and immune neurobiology through the University of Nebraska of Lincoln and University of Nebraska Medical Center before attending medical school at the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC).
